There are two types of health insurance that you can take when visiting the country:
Overseas Student Health Cover policy (OSHC): It is for the international students or foreign applicants who are coming to Australia for their studies on student visa subclass 500.Or, if you are on student visa and you need to extend your current visa you must need to have the OSHC. Overseas visitor health cover (OVHC): It is for the visitors who are coming to Australia with any specific purpose for a short period. If the visa holder get sick or have an accident while are here in Australia this OVHC will cover the medical cost.
If you are on an OSHC policy during your studies in the country and planning to stay in Australia after your graduation with a 485 Temporary Graduate visa, you will be required to change your OSHC to an OVHC before your OSHC policy expires. Why are OSHC and OVHC policies necessary?
Everyone is required to buy an appropriate health insurance policy before they arrive in Australia as per the criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs. It is essential to cover all your unexpected medical expenses in the country if required during your stay. An OSHC or OVHC policy typically covers the following medical expenses based on the type of health insurance you purchase:
